Dispelling Antiquated Myths about Credit Unions

    Last updated 1 month ago

As banks across the country tighten their lending standards and increase their interest rates, a number of American consumers have discovered the advantages of doing business with a financial institution called a credit union. Unlike traditional banking systems, credit unions are controlled by the account-holding owners of that particular institution. If you are interested in utilizing a credit union for you personal financial needs, don’t let these common myths about credit unions interfere with your decision.

Myth: Credit unions have a number of membership restrictions.

Even though membership to a particular credit union is contingent upon an individual’s participation in a particular workplace, region, or church group, most people can find a credit union in their area that they are eligible to join. In fact, a number of credit unions now employ “community charters,” which allow anyone who lives, works, or attends school in a particular surrounding region to become a member.

Myth: Credit unions offer fewer services than competing banks.

Today’s credit unions provide consumers with the same level of financial services as traditional banking institutions. These services include checking accounts, debit and credit cards, online banking, and savings and loan options. One advantage of using credit unions for personal banking is that these institutions don’t usually charge additional fees like ATM usage fees, check processing fees, or account transfer fees.

Myth: Credit unions don’t offer the same savings guarantee.

Even though money stored in a credit union isn’t backed by the FDIC, it’s backed by a separate, self-funded national insurance deposit fund. This fund is still federally guaranteed through the National Credit Union Administration. Because of this security, it is equally as safe for consumers to trust a credit union with their finances as it is to trust a competing big bank.

You can find out more about your credit union options by scheduling an appointment with 121 Financial Credit Union of Jacksonville. We offer a high level of personal service to help you with your financial needs. Our financial representatives are available at (904) 638-8026.
